How to Stop a Nosebleed in Under 5 Minutes
Nosebleeds happen at the worst possible times. In class, on a plane, in the middle of a game. Most people panic, tilt their head back, and stuff tissues up their nose. All of those are wrong.
Here's the method that actually works — the same technique recommended by the American Academy of Otolaryngology and emergency physicians.
The Correct Technique
-
1Stay calm and sit upright. Sitting up reduces blood pressure in the nasal blood vessels, which slows bleeding. Don't lie down.
-
2Lean slightly forward. This prevents blood from running down the back of your throat. Swallowing blood can cause nausea and vomiting.
-
3Pinch the soft part of your nose. Use your thumb and index finger to pinch the fleshy area just below the bony bridge. Pinching the hard bone at the top does nothing — the bleeding comes from lower down.
-
4Hold for 10 full minutes. Time it. Don't check early — releasing pressure restarts the clotting process. Breathe through your mouth.
-
5Release and check. If bleeding has stopped, avoid blowing your nose or bending over for at least 30 minutes. If still bleeding, repeat the pinch for another 10 minutes.
Common Mistakes
Tilting your head back is the most common mistake. It doesn't stop the bleeding — it just redirects blood down your throat, which can cause choking or an upset stomach.
Stuffing tissue up your nose can stick to the clot and restart bleeding when you pull it out. If you need to pack the nostril, use sterile gauze or a purpose-built nasal plug that's designed for safe removal.
Checking too early is the other big one. People pinch for 30 seconds, peek, see blood, and panic. The clot needs a solid 10 minutes of uninterrupted pressure to form.
Being Prepared Makes the Difference
The technique above works every time, but it works better when you have the right supplies. Sterile gauze, antiseptic wipes for cleanup, and a nasal plug can cut your response time significantly — especially when you're away from home and don't have access to a first aid kit.
That's exactly why we built Stop A Drop: a compact, vacuum-sealed kit with everything you need to handle a nosebleed quickly and cleanly, wherever you are.
